The Benefits of Homemade Dog Food

The benefits of homemade dog food | Solvang Gård

I'll never forget the day my rescue dog Pran was diagnosed with kidney failure and blood parasites. Standing in that Thai veterinary clinic, watching her struggle, I felt helpless. The commercial renal food cost a fortune, and worse - it was making her gain weight while her health declined. That desperate moment led me down a path that would transform not just Pran's life, but the lives of so many rescue dogs in Thailand. Within months of switching to homemade food, Pran's blood work showed normal kidney values. Her coat gleamed, her energy returned, and she was genuinely happy again. If you're wondering whether homemade dog food is worth the effort, let me share what I've learned feeding my pack and sharing my knowledge with so many dog parents.

I. The Truth About Commercial Dog Food (and vets)

Wait until you hear what's actually in your dog's kibble - it made me physically sick when I discovered it. We're talking dead animal carcasses, expired grocery store meat still wrapped in plastic and styrofoam, and yes, even euthanized pets. All this gets thrown into massive vats, ground up together, and blasted with heat up to 270°F. Any nutrition that might have existed? Gone. But the cancerous byproducts from all that high-heat processing? Those stay right in there. And this is the system that claims it knows what's best for your furry best friend - when it literally can't tell if it's processing chicken beaks or roadkill.

Now here's where it gets really frustrating - pet food in Europe supposedly has "the highest standards of hygiene, safety and quality" (source: FEDIAF). There are 31 different laws governing pet food in the EU (source: PetfoodIndustry) - this sounds impressive until you realise it's just a confusing mess with zero consistent enforcement. FEDIAF's safety guides? They're voluntary industry self-regulation - basically the pet food companies policing themselves (source: FEDIAF Safety). How's that working out for us?

And our vets - they want to help but they're completely set up to fail! Most veterinary schools admitted they don't have the staff or knowledge to teach nutrition properly (source: PubMed Study). So where do vets learn about pet food? From the pet food companies! The same ones selling you that bag of mysterious brown pellets! Imagine your doctor's entire nutrition education coming from McDonald's - that's exactly what's happening here. No wonder vets just repeat whatever the pet food sales reps tell them.

The enforcement chaos is mind-blowing: Sweden has their system split between multiple agencies and 21 different regional boards all doing their own thing, while Norway at least keeps it simple with one agency (source: PMC Nordic Study). So depending on which country makes your dog's food, you're getting completely different levels of oversight. It's Russian roulette with kibble!

Here's the bottom line that should terrify every dog owner: We're handing our dogs' lives over to massive corporations who care more about their profit margins than whether your dog lives to 8 or 18. Inflammatory diseases in dogs are through the roof - arthritis, allergies, cancer, kidney disease - all skyrocketing. Only 2 out of every 10 commercial dog foods even meet basic nutritional requirements. The other 8? Expensive junk that's slowly poisoning our best friends.

Vets are just repeating sales pitches from pet food reps because that's all the nutrition education they got. We're all trapped in this horrible system together, watching our dogs suffer while the pet food giants count their profits.

II. Remarkable Health Benefits You'll Notice

Energy and Happiness Bloom

Within days of switching to homemade food, you'll witness a transformation. My Thai street dogs, once lethargic on kibble, now bound through our Norwegian fields with puppy-like enthusiasm. Fresh ingredients are more digestible, enabling dogs to absorb real energy from their food rather than working hard to process fillers. One dog owner told me their three-year-old Angel went from stage three kidney failure to stage one within six months - and dropped from an unhealthy 26kg to a healthy 19kg.

Skin, Coat, and Eyes Transform

The change in appearance is dramatic. Within a month, you'll notice your dog's coat becoming softer, shinier, and shedding less. Those chronic skin allergies that plagued them? They often disappear completely. Scout struggled with digestion and bald patches her entire life until her parents switched to homemade food. The healthy oils like coconut oil provide nutrients that synthetic supplements in kibble can never match. Their eyes become brighter too - thanks to natural vitamin A from sweet potatoes and carrots.

Stronger Immunity, Fewer Vet Visits

Here's what amazes me most: dogs eating homemade food simply get sick less often. Their immune systems strengthen, chronic conditions improve, and those expensive vet visits become rare check-ups rather than emergency interventions. Fresh food provides zinc, B vitamins, and fatty acids that treat conditions from the inside out. You'll even notice smaller, firmer stools - a sign that your dog is actually using the nutrition instead of passing it through.

Longer life

Here's the benefit that makes everything worthwhile: homemade food can add years to your dog's life. When you remove toxins, mystery meat, and chemical preservatives, replacing them with real ingredients, your dog's body stops working overtime just to survive. Dogs fed properly prepared homemade food routinely live longer than kibble-fed counterparts - that's thousands more tail wags, morning cuddles, and happy walks together.

My girl Truffles is the best example: Even though she lived on the streets in Thailand for seven years, she is now 15 (!) and still strong and pretty much healthy. She even has all the blood parasites you can have and also kidney issues, but everything is under control thanks to the best food she can get.

III. Practical Benefits for Dog Owners

Knowing exactly what goes into my dogs' bowls brings incredible peace of mind. No mysterious "meat meal," no chemical preservatives, no wondering if that recall affects the bag in my pantry. When one of my dogs developed allergies, I simply adjusted the recipe. When another needed a renal diet, I reduced protein and added more vegetables. And seniors get more ingredients which benefit their special needs. This control means you can respond to your dog's changing needs throughout their life.

Despite what the pet food industry claims, homemade food often costs less than premium commercial brands - especially when you factor in reduced vet bills. I go even further and grow vegetables like pumpkins, beans, broccoli, carrots, sweet potatoes and herbs for my dogs. All organic and short travelled. And when breeding chickens, the roosters go to the dogs. Of course, not everyone can or wants to do that, but you can buy special offers or in bulk to save money.

Every bag of kibble requires intensive processing, packaging, and transportation. By cooking for your dog, you reduce industrial waste and can use local, seasonal ingredients. Here on the farm, vegetable scraps go to the chickens, and nothing is wasted. It's a small but meaningful way to reduce our environmental pawprint.

IV. Common Concerns and Simple Solutions

My basic recipes provide approximately 40% animal protein - higher quality than the 30% questionable protein in most kibbles. This foundation, enhanced with simple supplements like coconut oil for inflammation, fish oil for omega-3s, and turmeric for overall health, creates truly complete nutrition. When you check your dog's blood annually and watch their gums stay healthy pink while their energy soars, you'll see the proof - every dog I've transitioned has thrived.

Of course, getting dogs to eat vegetables can be the biggest challenge initially. My Thai street dogs were raised on chicken and rice - vegetables were alien to them! After many failed attempts, I discovered the secret: cook vegetables in delicious bone broth and chop them small. The broth's flavor penetrates everything, making even carrots irresistible. If your dog remains skeptical, simply blend vegetables completely so they disappear into the meal. Using this method, no dog has ever refused my food once they tried it.

The time investment worry disappears once you discover batch cooking. One Sunday afternoon in the kitchen provides a month of frozen meals - far more efficient than regular pet store trips. You're actually saving time while giving your dog infinitely better nutrition. And here's what I've learned: when you see your dog's health transform, you suddenly find time you didn't know you had. That two-hour cooking session becomes a joyful ritual rather than a chore.

You might face resistance from unexpected sources. Some veterinarians, influenced by pet food industry education, may discourage homemade food. Don't let this deter you - find a vet who supports your choice or seek a veterinary nutritionist's opinion. The key is documenting your dog's improvements with regular blood work. When Pran's kidney values normalized after just months on my homemade diet, even her initially skeptical vet became a believer. Numbers don't lie, and healthy dogs speak for themselves.

Your Dog's Best Life Starts Today

Remember Pran, suffering from kidney failure in Thailand? Today she runs through Norwegian snow with boundless energy, her blood work completely normal. Scout's digestive issues? Gone. Their companion's dull coat? Now it shines. The good old soul Truffles? With 15 years old, she’s still catching mice on the field. These aren't miracles - they're the natural result of feeding real food to the companions who give us unconditional love.

Every meal you prepare is an act of love that extends your dog's life and improves their quality of living. Would you feed your children only processed food? You don't need to be perfect. Start with one homemade meal a week or mix your homemade goodness with kibble. Watch your dog's response. See their energy increase, their coat shine, their eyes brighten.

As Jane Goodall's philosophy teaches us, we're connected to and responsible for the wellbeing of our animal companions. By choosing homemade food, you're not just feeding your dog - you're giving them their best possible life.
